Why Not McCain? Part I
Sun Jul 20, 2008 at 10:35:53 AM PDT
There's been some discussion here recently that versus trying to point out why we are supporting Senator Obama we should talk more about why we're not supporting Senator McCain. So, I thought I'd start off with WHY I'm not supporting Senator McCain and see if I can do a series of posts that will continue to point out all of the reasons (and they're numerous!). Follow me below the fold.
Now some may see this as a minor problem but for myself I see it as a much bigger problem.
One of the first things I learned about Senator McCain was that he left his first wife while she was recovering from a debilitating car accident. I'm no polyanna, I understand that sometimes thing happen that cause marriages to fall apart (having been divorced myself), but what about this:
The Republican Party is forever preaching to us about 'family values' and while I strongly believe that every family must have values, I would be interested in knowing how Senator McCain justifies these things:
Senator McCain was married for the first time in 1965. His wife (Carol Shipley) was a model with two children at the time of the marriage whom he adopted they were at the time 7 years old and 3 years old at the time. They had a child of their own in 1966. Cudos right?
WRONG: What ever possessed Senator McCain to REQUEST a combat assignment in in 1966?? Why would a fairly newly married man with a brand new baby sign up for combat duty? Why would you want to leave a new wife and three new children for this?? While I applaud anyone who has served in the military (coming from a very long line of veterans), I find this curious. Not only that but after being injured he requested a 2nd assignment (also full combat). Senator McCain has never been asked about this and frankly, I am baffled that someone who is newly married would ask for these types of assignments.
After being captured in 1967 Senator McCain was released from captivity in 1973 and rehabilitation took through 1974. By now his children would be in their teens. Beginning in 1976 Senator McCain was rumored to have had many extra-marital affairs. Pretty sad when you've left your wife of one year to serve in a battle area, return home nearly 9 years later and within 24 months you're already seeing other women?
I would like to know where Senator McCains FAMILY VALUES are. I don't see them. What I see when I look at this story is a vain, egotistical person who couldn't stand the idea of his 'model' wife being banged up in an accident. Never mind that his years of service resulted in not just physical but mental scars but he has no compassion for what his wife went through?
I'm sorry - Senator McCain FAILS on family values in my humble opinion.
Thanks for reading!
